People often ask for a brochure when they need a booklet, or a catalogue when a book would do the job better. Here is a quick way to choose, plus a few trends worth borrowing.

The four formats in plain English

  • Brochures are folded sheets. Think A4 folded to DL, or a tri-fold. Great for a quick pitch, a menu or an event.
  • Booklets are several pages held together, usually by staples through the spine. Ideal for programmes, guides, price lists and manuals.
  • Catalogues are booklets or books built to be flicked through, with lots of images. Use them for products, collections and portfolios.
  • Books are longer runs of pages with a flat spine. Perfect for annual reports, yearbooks, poetry, cookbooks and anything people will keep.

Binding, simplified

  • Saddle stitch (staples): economical, lies flat, best for smaller page counts.
  • Perfect bound (glued spine): a professional finish with a printed spine, suited to bigger page counts.
  • Other binding styles are available for special projects, ask us if you are unsure.

Trends worth borrowing

  • Zine-style layouts: bold type, torn-paper textures and bright, limited colour palettes (like the image above)
  • Mixed paper: a heavier cover with a lighter inner so the book feels premium without the cost
  • Short and useful: readers favour smaller, well-edited booklets over doorstoppers
  • Print and digital together: a QR code on the back cover that links to the online version or an offer
  • Local and personal: community histories, club journals, small-press books

Getting the layout right

  1. Page counts for stapled booklets work in multiples of four.
  2. Keep important text 5 to 10mm away from the trim and the spine.
  3. Use 3mm bleed on anything that runs off the page.
  4. Check image resolution. 300dpi at print size is the target.
  5. Supply cover and inside pages as the format asks for, and label them clearly.

Which one should you pick?

  • Quick sell or event: brochure
  • A guide, programme or price list: booklet
  • Showing a range of products: catalogue
  • A story, report or reference people will keep: book
